Osmania University Arts College Building to become the Third Building in India to be registered as a Trademark shortly

History has been created today with the famous Iconic OU arts college building which was filed for a Trademark for its exterior design in April 2024 and a building which has been an intrinsic part of Osmania University’s and Hyderabad aesthetic appeal since the year 1939 has been accepted for publication in the TM Journal and shall proceed towards registration in the next 4-5 Months.

The concept of trademarking buildings started in the United States. Owners of such a trademark have the exclusive right to use the Trademark of the building to market their goods and services in any form like merchandise, cups, mugs, gift articles. Some examples of TM filed and registered in United States include the Empire State Building in New York, the art deco spire of the Chrysler Building and the façade of the New York Stock Exchange. However, this trend has now spread and caught up with The Eiffel Tower in France and the Sydney Opera House which are also trademarked buildings.

Professor M Kumar, Vice Chancellor of OU has expressed his happiness on the development and mentioned that this will encourage other universities with iconic architecture to register for TMs.

Subhajit Saha, TM agent and founder of Resolute4IP  and also an alumni of OU who filed the application for the OU University mentioned that will be the third Trademarked building in India to be registered after the Famous TAJ Mahal Hotel and later the Bombay Stock Exchange are registered TMs in India.

Mr Saha hopes that the OU arts college will become a brand now. He further stated that more and more Iconic buildings with such beautiful architecture and legacy will follow the trend of registering their building images. Buildings like the T-HUB, T Works and even the Telangana Secretariat can be a fit case to register as Trademark.

Dr GB Reddy, himself being an IPR expert and IPR chair of DPIIT took this lead and initiative and mentioned that the TM for the arts college building of Osmania University will resonate a long way with its alumnus and stakeholders across the Globe.
